Whether you are interested in wearing or making customized human hair wigs, it is important to understand the basic process. Here are some of the most important steps:

• Measurements – the client and wigmaker meet, and measurements are taken of the client’s head. Measurements consist of the circumference of the head, from front hairline to neck, from ear to ear (over the head and then around the neck), length of neck, temple to temple, etc. A different option is to take a plaster cast of the client’s head.
• Wig block – the measurements are applied to a wooden wig block, and the foundation is made using the block.
• Cotton ribbons – these are nailed to the block, using the measurements gathered, to form the outline of the head.
• Cotton lace – it is wetted and then shaped smoothly over the wooden wig block. The color of lace should match the end hair color. The very front is generally made with a fine-mesh silk netting. The crown is made with cotton, nylon, or a coarser silk.
• Galloon – the different pieces of netting are fit together by sewing them to galloon which is a strong yet fine silk ribbon of the same color.
• Hair color and style – the client and wigmaker must discuss the color and style of wig desired.
• Knotting – also known as ventilating, knotting is the process by which the hairs are added to the foundation. Along the front hairline, the knots are often made with single hairs to create the most natural look. On the crown of the head, though, multiple hairs can be added at once.
• Styling – the client is met with again for the best possible styling – the client can even wear the wig during the styling, as though it is his or her own true hair. Of course, to set curls, etc., the wig is taken off and set in an oven.

Customized human hair wigs made in the above fashion are worn by actors of film and stage, as well as by “regular” people for everyday wear.
